Learning Beyond the Classroom: Our Experience at American Corner Surkhet

“How interactive learning helped our class grow and gain confidence.”

Learning can be exciting when teachers find creative ways to engage students. Our English teacher divided the class into ten groups and asked each team to prepare presentations on different chapters of our book. One of the teams presented at the American Corner Surkhet, including interviews, interactive activities, and discussions. This experience encouraged the students to think critically, communicate clearly, and work together effectively. For many students, it was their first time speaking in front of a large audience. Though nerve wracking, it helped them overcome fear, gain confidence, and improve public speaking skills. Watching classmates support each other also motivated everyone to participate actively.

Compared to traditional teaching, where students mostly listen to lectures and memorize lessons, this interactive approach made learning more engaging. Researching, collaborating, and expressing ideas helped students remember information better and develop important life skills like teamwork, creativity and public speaking. Educational expert John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life, education is life itself.” This reflects the idea that learning through experience and active participation is more effective than memorization alone. Studies have also shown that students who learn through interactive activities demonstrate better problem solving and communication skills. For instance, research indicates that interactive learning environments can develop students’ critical thinking skills and enhance communication abilities.

In Nepal, where classrooms are often crowded and lessons mostly lecture based, such interactive learning is especially valuable. It helps students develop confidence, critical thinking, and collaboration skills that are crucial for higher education and future careers. Encouraging more schools to adopt this method can greatly improve the quality of education in the country. Through this experience, the whole class realized that learning is not just about reading books or memorizing chapters, it is about growing as individuals and supporting each other.
