Society Of Ex Students of SOS HGS (SESHS) in collaboration with SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Surkhet organized a Career Counselling session for the students of grade 10,11 and 12 on Friday. The session included panel discussion with the Alumni of the school now established in various fields followed by a roundtable discussion where students asked the Alumni questions about various career options, their personal struggles and ways to choose a better career for themselves. The Alumni included Dr. Saroj Giri, founding president of SESHS and physician at the Province Hospital Surkhet, SESHS past president and Assistant Professor of Mid Western Univeristy Govinda KC, Nepal Army Major Shyam Thapa, SESHS past president and civil servnet Dibya Raj Khadka and SESHS president and Assistant Professor of Mid Western Univerity Er. Prabin Bhusal. During the individual presentations, each panelists remembered their days during the school and shared how the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School shaped their thoughts and inspired them to explore their own ways after graduation. They focused on the struggles of each of their careers and how they eventually got to the positions they are right now.

Dr. Saroj Giri, a general medicine practicineer at the Province hospital Surkhet urged the students to look into all aspects of a particular careers before jumping in. He focused on the fact that every careers have their brighter and darker sides and urged the students to connect to the Alumni and explore all the options before joining the bandwagon. Dibya Raj Khadka, a civil servant briefed the students about the various aspects of Nepal’s civil service and asked the students to ascertain their personality types before choosing a career. Assistant professor and entrepreneur Govinda KC said that though there are no formula and shortcuts for success, staying dedicated, determined and disciplined are the most important skills a student can possess. With his personal story of how he switched careers from an IT professional to studying and working as a management professional in the US to returning to Nepal as an academician, he urged the students to always be ready to learn new things switch careers in need arises. Nepal Army Major Shyam Thapa explained the recruiting process of Nepal Army and its various divisions. He clarified how joining the army changes an average person into a disciplined soldier ready to fight for one’s country and people. He also inspired the students to explore about the various technical and combat recruitments in the army and contact him or other Alumni’s for further clarification.

President of SESHS Er. Prabin Bhusal delved into the various career options as an engineer. Having done his B.Tech and MBA in India, he walked the students through about the differences between studying in Nepal and India and also urged the students to explore the options available before deciding a career option.
Speaking at the program, ward chair of Birendranagar-4 Sher Bahadur KC thanked the Alumni for sharing valuable career insights with the students. He also asked the students to to stay humble and ready to learn new things.In his closing remarks, Principal of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Harihar Basnet thanked SESHS for organising the program and asked the students to connect to the Alumni for any sort of career and life guidelines. He affirmed the school’s commitment in organising such events in the future that connects the Alumni with the school.
