Spinal Injury Union, a Surkhet based non-profit working towards empowerment of people with disabilities, in partnershiop with Save The Children’s Shift campaign, has launched ‘Pangra Ko Udan: Where Wheels Fly’ a campaign regarding the empowerment of people with disabilites through wheelchair basketball matches and story telling sessions.
The inagural match was held in the basketball court of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Surkhet on 30th of Shrawan. People living with Spinal Cord Injuries played wheelchair basketball match and shared their lived experiences as a wheelchair athlete in Karnali Province. The audience included teachers and students who later asked the athletes about various issues.
Speaking at the program, Ayush Shrestha Joshi, Director of Advocacy, Campaigns, Communication and Media for Nepal and Bhutan at Save the Children Nepal expressed his hope that the campaign will become a milestone for adaptive sports in Nepal. He expressed his solidarity towards the Campaign and congratulated the organizers for launching the Campaign.
Dibya Raj Khadka, founder of Spinal Injury Union thanked the School and Save the Children Nepal for providing the platform for such an event and expressed his hope for future collaboration with the organizations. Also speaking the event, SOS Children’s Village Surkhet director Gopal Ghimire praised the players for inspiring the students and also expressed his solidarity towards the campaign.
The Campaign will continue for next five months and the organizers will travel to various schools of Surkhet, organize basketball matches and interect with the students regarding accessibility, adaptability and the empowerment of people with disabilities.
